Blue Reefs: Primordial Wilderness is the first solo exhibition of an emerging Brisbane artist CJF Hall (Christopher James Francis Hall). Hall is an Australian painter using a non-representational and abstract style. His Reef Series are produced using acrylic paint wet on wet and wet on dry. Natural elements such as sand, salt and phosphorescence are fused into the medium, while flame and ice are employed to manipulate the end result. The works were born from the artist's personal experience of grief and the universal desire to find meaning in the death of a loved one.

The experience of sorrow is reflected in the oceans uncontrollable watery remoteness while the clarity of light represents the wish to transmute grief into something that can be lived with. For the observer the phenomena of pareidolia is stimulated, being the innate human need to understand our surroundings. Thus, the Reef Series represents the soul quest to make sense of life.
